150 New Lone Soldiers Join “Ach Gadol”

At the start of every Hebrew course at Mechve Alon army base, dozens of young new immigrants gather – men and women who have chosen to dedicate their first years in Israel to meaningful service in the IDF. Many of them arrived alone, without family, and are officially recognized as lone soldiers. During this early, sensitive stage of adjustment, the big questions arise, uncertainty sets in, and the loneliness can feel heavier than ever.

Recently, at the opening of one of the latest Hebrew course cycles at Mechve Alon, no fewer than 150 lone soldiers signed up to receive a “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” through the Ach Gadol organization. It’s a powerful reminder that the personal mentorship we provide is not just valuable – it’s essential.

A journey that begins with Hebrew – and continues all the way through service

Lone soldiers who arrive at Mechve Alon go through a critical orientation period: adapting to a new language, culture, and military environment. It’s a time full of question marks – Which military role should I choose? How do I deal with being so far from home? How do I open a bank account? What happens when I face a personal crisis?

That’s exactly where Ach Gadol’s volunteers come in. Together with our professional team, we make sure every soldier has someone to talk to, someone who truly listens and understands them – because even the strongest fighters need emotional support.

This isn’t just a registration – it’s the beginning of a journey

For the soldiers, it’s more than filling out a form. It’s the moment they choose not to walk this path alone. They ask for guidance – and receive a real person who stands by them throughout their service, and beyond.

For us, it’s an incredible privilege – to witness the deep need again and again, and to meet it with open hearts, commitment, and lived experience.

Because with a Big Brother or Big Sister – no soldier ever has to walk this road alone.
