An Unforgettable Experience
Excitement at the Hebrew Ceremony
As someone who is part of the Big Brother program and a friend and mentor to other lone soldiers, going to the Hebrew ceremony felt like going back in time, seeing myself standing in the crowd, so excited for what was to come and so proud to be able to protect my country and my people.
The Meaning of a Big Sign
Being there for Even, holding a big sign that said, "That's my little brother," even though he's older than me, put a smile on his face as he stood during the ceremony. During my own ceremony, because of COVID regulations and restrictions, no one was able to come cheer me on, so it made it even more special that I got to be there to cheer for another lone soldier.
Funny Stories and Memories from the Base
After the ceremony, we shared silly stories about things that had happened on base, like how I used to get confused with directions in Hebrew. Machve Alon, the base that runs the Hebrew course, will always hold a special place in my heart. It was where I not only learned Hebrew but also learned about Israel and the diverse people who make it what it is. My Hebrew course team included Russians, Ukrainians, French, Ethiopians, South Africans, and Americans, and I learned so much from each of them.
Being There in Meaningful Moments
It's a special thing to be there for someone during such a meaningful moment, but it's even more powerful when you remember how much that moment meant to you when you were in their shoes. Now, I get to support them, hold up silly signs, and remind them that I'm here for you.
A New, Meaningful Beginning
40 Big Brother volunteers came to the Machve Alon ceremony to support the excited soldiers and start a new journey full of experiences and challenges together in military service.
